Foods that Cause Acid Reflux: Diet as a Key to Disease Management

Also included are acidic foods, such as citrus fruits, citrus beverages, and high acid vegetables such as tomatoes and raw onions. Chocolate is yet another typical trigger food. Beverages to exclude from an acid reflux diet include caffeinated drinks, such as soda, coffee and tea.

Examples of "permissible" or safe foods include lean meats, non-acidic fruits such as apples and bananas, and vegetables such as carrots, peas, green beans and baked potatoes. Also included are a majority of grains, such as whole wheat and white bread, as well as brown and white rice.

While a majority of the foods that one might love are to be excluded from the diet, there are many other safe alternatives to supplement one's diet. After all, lifestyle changes are never easy, however it is for the "better good," and one will greatly benefit in the long run. Included in these benefits is that a majority of the "safe" foods are much healthier for the body. In turn, one might also lose excess weight. In fact, overweight or obese individuals do have a greater risk of developing acid reflux.
