Exploring the Options Available For Acid Reflux Treatment?
Acid reflux treatment is essential to those suffering with the disease. Acid reflux, otherwise known as gastro esophageal disease or GERD, is caused by a weak or "slow" lower esophageal sphincter. This sphincter is responsible for pushing food from the esophagus into the stomach, and keeping the food in the stomach before digestion. A malfunctioning lower esophageal sphincter allows acid and food to escape the stomach. The acid actually burns the esophagus, causing the painful acid reflux symptoms. If acid reflux is left untreated, additional digestive system complications can also occur. Just as every individual is unique, acid reflux treatment also varies upon the individual. The first step in acid reflux treatment is lifestyle changes. These changes include a change of diet, including excluding trigger foods, and adding safe, healthy foods. If one cannot exactly determine which foods consumed are triggering acid reflux symptoms, a food diary may assist in determining the trigger foods. The diet is encouraged to not be a diet at all, rather a way of life. In addition to an "acid reflux diet," other lifestyle changes must occur as an acid reflux treatment in order to relieve symptoms. These include abstaining or limiting caffeine and carbonated beverages, coffee, alcoholic beverages, smoking, and losing any excess weight. In fact, those who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk of acid reflux disease. In addition, it is preferable to raise the head and shoulders as much as eight inches during sleep in order to allow a person with acid reflux to comfortably rest without symptoms. By elevating the head and shoulders, gravity may assist in keeping the acid in the stomach where it belongs. When Lifestyle Changes Are Not Enough If lifestyle changes do not alleviate symptoms, medications may be added to the acid reflux treatment. Such medications include over-the-counter (OTC) drugs such as antacids, and perhaps prescription medications. A physician can advise or prescribe any medications needed. However, any medications that are available today are only short-term, which means that the medication(s) must be taken daily, indefinitely. Acid reflux surgery is another treatment option. This is a good option if one is a candidate for the surgery, and who has not received relief from medications and lifestyle changes, or does not want to indefinitely remain on medication. Acid reflux surgery is performed by laparoscopy, and works by strengthening the lower esophageal sphincter. The effects of acid reflux are painful. The good news is that there are acid reflux treatments that can help ease the pain. Discuss any acid reflux treatment options with your doctor to determine your appropriate treatment to allow acid reflux relief.
