What you should know about Acid Reflux Babies
Acid reflux is difficult enough in adults, but did you know that acid reflux can occur in babies? Acid reflux is a condition where the stomach contents propel themselves back into the esophagus from the stomach. Since the esophagus is not equipped to handle the acidity, painful symptoms, and possible complications, occur. Acid reflux babies, or babies suffering with acid reflux disease, are in pain in which they do not understand, and cannot voice what is wrong. This creates suffering for the parents of acid reflux babies as well. Often, the infant is crying, and parents do not understand how to ease their child's suffering. What many do not know, is that acid reflux is actually common in infants, due to their underdeveloped digestive systems. More than half of all infants experience acid reflux within the first three months of life. Symptoms of acid reflux babies include spitting, vomiting, coughing, irritability, poor eating, and blood in the stool. Fortunately, most acid reflux babies grow out of this disorder as they mature. More Information Though it is rare, some infants may have a more severe form of acid reflux. Depending upon the severity, poor growth, malnutrition, blood loss from the acidic burning of the esophagus and breathing problems may result. Due to these reasons, if your infant is showing outward signs of acid reflux, it is imperative to consult the pediatrician. Additional complications can occur over time, and it is best to treat acid reflux in the earlier stages of damage to the esophagus. Due to the age of the affected, it cannot be stressed enough that if one suspects that their infant has acid reflux, to consult their physician. Tests may be conducted to determine if acid reflux is indeed the culprit to the infant's distress. The "acid reflux baby" will have to be closely monitored for feeding, and growth of the infant, as well as anything that could affect their digestive health.
