Acid Reflux and Vinegar: Snake Oil or a Great Home Remedy?

In the search for relief, there has been one possible home remedy considered-acid reflux and vinegar.

Millions of people suffer with acid reflux. Acid reflux is a condition where acid and food rise from the stomach, into the esophagus. It is a painful condition, and many sufferers seek treatment from the disease. In fact, acid reflux seems to be a growing epidemic in today's population, possibly due to the high fat and high sugar diets, along with a sedentary lifestyle.

As with many diseases, there are numerous over-the-counter (OTC), as well as prescription medications available to treat the symptoms of acid reflux. However, some may not appreciate the side effects of the drugs. Some may not find relief in medications alone. Others prefer not to be on medication, and pursue the home remedy, or natural route.

Acid Reflux and Vinegar: A Potential Homeopathic Cure but Proceed with Caution

One possible home remedy is apple cider vinegar. However, one might ask, why vinegar? Is it not acidic in itself? Strangely enough, there have been many success stories posted on message boards about acid reflux and vinegar.

While the theory is not tested, some believe that particular acid reflux sufferers may have too little acid in the stomach. It is claimed that by adding acid, such as vinegar, to the stomach, symptoms may be relieved. This is however, unproven till now.

Another theory regarding acid reflux and vinegar is the placebo effect. If one is offered an easy remedy for their painful condition, believing that it will work, it will work. The mind is a powerful thing. Even though the acid reflux may still be physically apparent, the person may feel better, sincerely believing that this remedy cured their acid reflux.

However, the goal of any acid reflux sufferer is to be relieved of their painful symptoms. To some, the reason why some remedies work does not matter. They are willing to try something, anything, to make themselves feel better. After all, vinegar is not harmful to the body itself, so why not try it? There are risks however, with acid reflux and vinegar, to some people. Though the only risks are acid reflux related, such as increased pain and symptoms. Every body is different, and if there is a possibility of something working that is natural, some might brave the possibility of increased acid reflux symptoms to see if something might actually work.
